Introducing Throwback Thursdays!

Category: Blog - September 02, 2010

Welcome to Throwback Thursdays!

In the last 60 or so years the world has changed a little ; )

Around here, Thursdays are dedicated to looking back over the last 60 years. We chose 60 because the Parade of HomesSM has been around that long. Maybe I'll give a history lesson on the evolution of the home tour when I have more patience for it. But probably not.

From 983 to 2,349 square feet in an average new home to the change in percentage of women in the workforce- this Woman's Day article covers it all- and got me thinking about all the things they didn't mention about how homes have changed... like

How we build now:
greener, safer, faster, cheaper

What we build now:
home styles, exercise rooms, master baths, 3 car garages (attached for MN winters thank you kindly), anyone toured any 'rec rooms' lately?

Where we build:
further out of the city, back far enough from rivers & wetlands, further away from family & neighbors

When we build:
trending later in life- less stable jobs, more moving means 20-somethings are less likely to own homes now than a decade ago, building again as active adults

What hasn't changed?

Why we build:
I think that has stayed the same- we build because we want to own a home. A place to call our own, to raise families in, a roof to watch fireworks from, maybe even a basement to scream in w/o the neighbors hearing, a ginormous bathtub to loose ourselves in- this is where the American dream wakes up every morning and pours itself a cup of joe. And just like moving from 983  to 2,349 square feet- builders keep listening to what people want to own. And they build it.

So, I am curious- what do you think the biggest change is over the last 60 years in housing?

Ps. I kind of want the pants on lady from the 1970's montage from the linked article!!

Thanks for stopping by!
